BobDog*
welcomes you
to Cleydael...

*(thinks he owns the place...)

Bob bears a striking resemblance to Mrs. Richardson's dog photographed in 1937, in the report on Cleydael in the WPA historic buildings survey.Wonder if Mrs. Richardson had a Dandie Dinmont?
The fabric of the house is in good structural condition, and a lot of interior restoration was done by the previous owners. However, quite a lot still needs to be done.

The current back elevation was originally the front. When the house was first built, both the front and back had Greek Revival porches like the surviving one on the current back elevation.

Current front elevation showing the expansive front porch just crying out for rocking chairs! The previous owners, the Pollocks, were very accomplished gardeners, so we are inheriting some very lovely herbacious borders.

The front porch wraps around the right side of the house. The chimneys are inside the walls rather than outside -- an architectural peculiarity relatively common on the Northern Neck and in Maryland.

Cleydael in Winter

View of the Backyard. Beyond the lawn is about 7 acres of woods.

View of the present lean-to kitchen wing (ca. 1900) and screen porch (ca. 1920) which are to be extended and rebuilt as a kitchen / family room combination with a higher roofline more in scale with the house and of the same pitch as the roof on the original house.

Originally, we'd thought the barn might be contemporary with the house itself. However, barn experts have dated it as turn of the century to early 20th century because of the wire nails used and circular sawn boards. It's falling down and unsafe. Our hope is to demolish it and rebuild a repro, using as much of the old materials as can be salvaged.
