Tours:
The best way to tour Cleydael is through the program of Booth Escape Route Tours organized by the Surratt Society. There are several tours in April & May and another group of tours in the autumn. As the pre-eminent non-profit group fostering research into the various aspects of Lincoln Assassination, the Surratt Society is worth of support. The tours are usually narrated by historian Mike Kauffman, author of American Brutus, the most comprehensive historical work on Booth in recent years -- an essential read for anyone interested in the topic.
Smithsonian Associates also does a couple of Booth tours over the course of the year, narrated by National Park Service Historian Emeritus Ed Bearss. Usually, the SI tour doesn't visit the interior of the house as they're generally on a tight schedule, whereas the Surratt tour generally does. However, if one is really into the topic, it's worth doing both tours, if only to spend a day listening to the ever-fascinating Ed Bearss, now in his 80's and still going strong.
Some other groups occasionally organize tours as well, including the Fredericksburg Historical Society, various Civil War Roundtable groups, and a commercial company called Tour America.
Private tours can be arranged by appointment by emailing owner Kathryn Coombs at Whigrose1860@aol.com or phoning 540 775-1228. Plans are afoot for regular open houses over the course of the year as well, so bookmark this page.
